Microsoft Word, like most Office programs, contains hundreds of features most of us never see. In the Insert menu in Word there is a Field menu. If you click Insert > Field... you'll see the following dialog box:

 

As you can see, Word will insert the Date automatically in any number of formats. Not just the current date, but the last time the document was modified, when it was created and others. You can use Fields to keep track of authors, processes and document revisions using fields.



You'll also find a mathematical formula editor to use if you need to write complicated formulas in your documents. See the attached document for a mathematical limerick that was created entirely in the equation editor in Word.
