Custom Toolbar Buttons

The majority of MS Office toolbars we see are set to factory standard. The whole point of a toolbar however, is to customize your work environment. If you don’t know what a button does, why is it taking up space on your screen?

Right click on any toolbar or menu. You should see Customize… as the last option on the menu that pops up. When you click there, you should see this dialog box.

Scroll down through the Categories list box on the Commands tab until you see Macros. Then drag the smiley face (not my idea!) up to the main toolbar, maybe next to the currency formatting button ($).

Once you’ve placed it there, right-click on it and find the option Assign Macro… on the popup menu. A list of available macros will appear including the one we just created—ToggleFormulas. Choose that one, click OK and close the dialog box.

Make sure you have a spreadsheet displayed that has some formulas in it and then click on the button several times to test it.

Be aware that many other functions are already available as buttons in the customize toolbar dialog box above. Unmerge Cells, Select Visible Cells Only and Paste Values are common actions that can be placed on the toolbar obviating the need to go through multiple menus.
